Protect Employees From the Harmful Health Effects of UV Radiation

According to the CDC National Center for Environmental Health report, employees outdoor may suffer from over-exposure to UV light when working outdoors in an excessive heat warning environment.

Risk of High UV Exposures

  • Sunburn is a sign of short-term overexposure, while premature aging and skin cancer are side effects of prolonged UV exposure.
  • UV exposure raises the risk of potentially blinding eye diseases if not used eye protection.
  • Overexposure to UV radiation can lead to serious health problems, including cancer.

Protect employees from the sun

Use sunscreen

Sunscreen is a product you put on your skin to protect it from UV rays. But it’s important to know that sunscreen is just a filter, which means it does not block all UV rays. Sunscreen cannot extend your time in the sun. Even with proper sunscreen use, some UV rays still get through.

Some cosmetics are considered sunscreen products. Such as moisturizers, lipsticks, and foundations. If they have SPF on the label means the product provides sun protection.

Staying Hydrated in the Summer

Summertime is always the best time to enjoy being outdoors, whether going to the beach, parks, or other activities. However, before enjoying summer, remember the importance of staying adequately hydrated.

Hydration is always important, especially in hot and humid weather, as we lose much of our body fluids through sweat. Dehydration threatens our bodies since the body is made up of more than 60 percent water. When body fluids decrease, our body is in significant harm.

Many different beverages, such as Gatorade, ensure proper hydration. Not all drinks will help with hydration. In other words, not all beverages create equally. Water is the best fluid to provide hydration, as it keeps the body cool.

Protect your skin with clothing

Wear clothing to cover your skin when you are out in the sun. Clothes provide different levels of UV protection. Long-sleeved shirts, pants, or long skirts cover the most skin and are the most protective. Dark colors generally provide more protection than light colors. A tightly woven fabric protects better than loosely woven clothing. Dry material is usually more protective than wet fabric.
